Fresh from covering the backstage scene at Bonnaroo 2015 in Tennesee, Loweprofessional Dana (distortion) Yavin only had a few moments to catch up with us before her next gig shooting the Firefly Music Festival in Delaware. We asked her about this year’s experience at the farm, how she likes her new Pro Runner x450 AW II, and what she’s looking forward to this summer. Take a read and enjoy!
Your favorite backstage moments?
Meeting Denis Leary. I’ve been a huge fan of his for years! I didn’t even know he was going to be at Bonnaroo, so that was a huge treat. Also, Robert Plant and his crew are always fun to hang out with.
How did you like traveling with your new Pro Runner x450 AW II?
I absolutely love it. It’s small enough to carry around, but big enough to fit all my gear. I love that it’s a rolling bag. At a huge four-day festival where you walk miles over a lot of rough terrain, it provides a lot of relief to your back.
How do you change things up when you cover backstage versus the pit?
It’s very different. Way less stress and more time to chill and hang out. You’re shooting one-on-one with the artists, which is always a lot of fun. It’s really a different world and exciting in its own way. You get to meet a lot of new people and I love challenging myself to try and get interesting and creative portraits even in a boring environment. Most festivals have the same backgrounds–grass, metal fences, bunches of chairs or a trailer, so it’s fun to experiment and try to do something cool.
What are you looking forward to next? We know you have Firefly coming right up. Seems like it will be an amazing summer for you…
Yeah, summer is always a fascinating and busy time full of travels. It’s very intense but it’s great. After Firefly, I’m gonna do local shows and shoots in NYC before I go back on tour and do more festivals in August. My body is seriously begging for some recovery time! I love being on the go non-stop, but sometimes just chilling at home with my cat for a night or two sounds just magical.
