The thing that I love most about photography is access. The camera inside of that bag is a passport to opportunity. It provides access to people, places, and opportunities that, with any other profession, I would simply not have the good fortune to experience.

After 11 very full days of shooting, I invite you to come with me on a photographic journey around the ring road of Iceland…

Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall.

I have been using Lowepro bags since I began my professional career over 19 years ago. Cameras, lenses, and tripods have come and gone but I still have and use a couple of Lowepro bags that have been with me since the beginning. My day-to-day assignments are in the world of commercial photography. For this, my primary bag is the Pro Roller X 300 AW. I also spend a bit of my time shooting landscapes for Getty. My Lowepro bags have always been exceptionally reliable and, in some cases, have actually allowed me to capture certain shots. In Honduras of 2005, I needed to wade through a river to reach a small village to photograph the locals. All of my gear went into my DryZone bag, got sealed up, and it was floated across the river. Not a drop of water entered the bag.

My latest adventure in December of 2017 was to Iceland. This was my fifth photography excursion to the spectacular island nation. What keeps me coming back to Iceland is the diversity, the climate and the abundance of contrast. By contrast, I am referring to the fact that you can drive 20 minutes down the road and not only does the landscape completely change but so does the weather.

The reason why I selected the ProTactic 450 AW bag for this trip was that I love how lightweight and yet rigid and durable it is. I don’t think twice about tossing it down onto sharp, jagged rocks or into the mud to whip it open to quickly grab my camera. And when I’m working with an assistant, the top and side openings are extremely handy for grabbing a piece of gear in a hurry.

On every trip to Iceland, I rent an SUV from iRent.is and I drive the “ring road” east. On each previous trip, I have stopped in the town of Hofn, turned around and come back. On this particular trip, I brought my girlfriend with me and we decided to try something new and drive the entire circumference of Iceland. It was an amazing experience and I’m glad that I did it but I won’t lie – 90% of the photographs that we captured were on the Reykjavik side of Hofn.
